Shadow of the Colossus is a game that is open to interpretation. Besides the colossi, which can be seen as both antagonistic and benevolent beings, little is known about the game's world. There are many mysteries associated with this game that puzzle players with every replay. This article will explore some of the more predominant theories floating around with respect to Shadow of the Colossus. The first theory is that this game takes place in some kind of purgatory-like land where Wander fights for his life against giant monsters, so they can stay alive and at peace in their own personal "worlds". This concept is explored further in the book, "Shadow of the Colossus: Analysis, Interpretation, and Theory". This idea is derived from several actions of the game. When Wander is fighting a colossus for the first time, he sees its life-force or spirit leave its body through a beam of light. We also see Wander's spirit leave his body when he dies fighting a colossus. Both spirits go up to what looks like an aurora borealis where they are suspended in darkness until Wander passes another trial. Upon passing this trial, their spirits are released into the world below. It would make sense that this purgatory-like land would be similar to what appears to be heaven or the afterlife. Another interesting fact about this game is when Wander leaves the last colossus in the game, he says "Since I know the answer to that question, it makes me feel like I'm really done with this world." This makes one wonder what his final task was in this game. Some theorists believe he had to learn the language of the colossi in order for them to be at peace. Another theory is that Wander's task was to see how many colossi he could kill before his spirit left him. Another theory is that Wander's task was to prove himself worthy of reaching heaven (which he passed). Others say that he was trying to remove himself from this strange place by finding a way out for both him and the colossi. The developers have tried to keep these details vague so players can draw their own conclusions. In the English version, Wander's final words are "I wonder if anyone will remember me..." which leads some to believe that he is unsure of whether he will be remembered or not. Another theory is that Wander has a disease which has caused him to hallucinate the entire game. This theory is based on several clues found in the game, mostly that there are no bodies found anywhere. Some people say that the colossi are dead, or were dead by the time of Wander's arrival. Many believe that they are just sleeping. However, without bodies, there is no way to confirm this. Furthermore, if Wander was hallucinating, it would explain why the game has no dialogue and only one word is spoken in the entire game (by Wander shortly before descending to find Agro). It would also explain why there are several instances where the game freezes and bugs appear for a few seconds (during Agro's wandering phase and after defeating Colossus 11). It might also explain why we never see any living humans in the game.
